Audience gets glimpse of Carifesta performers

Last evening at the Theatre Guild, Kingston was all about `folklore and rights’, the theme Guyana will be taking when they arrive later this week to celebrate the twelfth staging of the Caribbean Festival of Arts in Haiti.

The Guyanese public were invited to view what their country will be presenting at the festival and a taste of the Guyana Night exposition which is the night Guyana is designated to showcase in grandeur the culture, arts and heritage of its people.

The Kingston playhouse was the scene of a myriad of the performing arts: from dancing, to steelpans, drama and drums. Beginning at 17:00hrs the cultural show opened with the national anthem played by the national steel orchestra, followed by a welcome from Al Creighton before flowing onwards.

For nearly two hours the Guyana delegation showcased excerpts of their craft in every performing art.

The reason for such a small arena, as compared to the National Cultural Centre which can accommodate 1500 people was to adapt the presenting artists to the space and resources available in Haiti.

The theatre they will be performing at in Haiti is roughly the same size, and the same seating capacity as the Theatre Guild.

Acting Director of Youth, Gillian Frank was in attendance among other guests and invitees.

The Minister responsible for Culture is to meet with the contingent before they leave.

The Guyana delegation of 80+ leaves for twelve days in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
