The National Milling Company (NAMILCO) became the first major sponsor to throw their weight behind the inaugural GT Beer Futsal Championship, donating an undisclosed sum to the tourney organizers the Petra Organization yesterday at a simple presentation ceremony.
Speaking at the entity’s headquarters on the East Bank of Demerara, Financial Controller Fitzroy McLeod said the role of sport in the development of young people both physically and mentally is well regarded. According to McLeod, It should be of no surprise that the company supports events that focus on the overall development of individuals, noting that the institution is very proud to be a part of the sponsorship team of the football event.
Co-Director of the Petra Organization and tourney coordinator Troy Mendonca expressed gratitude to the company for their partnership in the event, stating that he is extremely pleased for the confidence shown in his organization by the company.
He further said that kudos must be given to the company for their continued support of social events nationally while nothing “It’s only fair that I ask fans and players to continue support the company. Once again, the Petra Organization thanks you for supporting the event”.
Futsal action will return to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Homestretch Avenue tonight when the event commences with four slated group fixtures.
In the opening fixture from 19:00hrs, Albouystown will lock horns with Globe Yard in a group-B affair while the second matchup of the evening from 19:45hrs will pit Agricola against Kitty Weavers in a group-A contest.
In the third matchup of the night, North Ruimveldt will lock horns with West Back Road from 21:00hrs while the final fixture of the night will be a titanic affair when tourney favourites Sparta Boss oppose Alexander Village from 21:45hrs.
The event which was officially launched on August 13th, will feature 16 teams competing in an initial group stage format with four teams being divided into as many groups. Upon the completion of the group round, the top two finishers in each group will progress to the knockout round.
Group-A will comprise Agricola, Queen Street Tigerbay, Leopold Street and Kitty Weavers while group-B will consist of Albouystown, Sparta Boss, Alexander Village and Globe Yard. Group-C will comprise West Front Road, Show Stoppers, Sophia and Broad Street while group-D will feature the likes of Bent Street, North Ruimveldt, West Back Road and BV.
The winner of the tournament will collect $500,000 and the championship trophy while the second, third and fourth place finishers will collect $250,000, $125,000 and $75,000 and the corresponding accolade.
