Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Chairman of National Selectors, Rayon Griffith lauded the work and discipline exhibited by the 15 players who recently received their contracts ahead of the 2015 Professional Cricket league (PCL) Regional four-day season.
The players received their contracts on Monday and Stabroek Sports met with the mastermind of Guyana’s selection process, Griffith, who yesterday said he was pleased to have forged a good, hard-working unit who in a few months will be on a quest to successfully defend their Regional 4-day title and possibly bring home the Regional Super 50 relic as well.
“We had most of the players from the last contract and we retained them because we had a good year and everyone gave a good account of themselves and earned their selections,” said Griffith. He also called out to the younger Cricket Guyana Incorporated (CGI) Academy players to take heed of the requirements for such a positive step in their careers.
“The academy guys as well we encourage them to do the same so when the door opens they can put themselves in contention to also receive contracts.” The former national pacer elaborated on how good it was to see the hunger and desire shown by the players in their weekly training sessions, adding that he was happy to see the entire team together and training as a unit.
“As we were training some guys were split up, some played CPL and before that some were with the West Indies but now we have everyone together so we want to see what they are doing. It’s much better because the puzzle will develop and the younger players too can learn as well so it’s a good feeling,” he concluded.
The 15 players will be placed under three respective contracts grouped A, B and C for the next year and will continue to train, upkeep their fitness among other mandated requirements in the professional player contract.
The 15 players read: Chris Barnwell, Anthony Bramble, Paul Wintz, Raymon Reifer, Veerasammy Permaul, Devendra Bishoo, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Shimron Hetmyer,
Ronsford Beaton, Keon Joseph, Assad Fudadin, Rajendra Chandrika, Vishaul Singh, Javon Jearles (Barbados) and Kandasammy Surujnarine.
Leon Johnson and Shivnarine Chanderpaul have West Indies retainer contracts and are still part of the team.
