On Wednesday, the National Museum’s eighth annual Taxidermy Children’s Camp hosted a graduation ceremony for its 46 participants.
According to a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA), the 2015 camp was held in two phases with the aim of enlightening and educating the students about “museums, Guyana’s wildlife and to establish an awareness of the present environmental issues regarding monuments, heritage and archival records.” In addition, the participants were also taught the preservation techniques in taxidermy and they were able to create simple museum exhibits.
All 46 students were presented with certificates of participation, however, two students, Kamilah Lambert and Shakeel Edwards received tokens for outstanding performances. The camp was as a result of the collaborative efforts of the following: the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Iwokrama, National Trust, National Archives, the University of Guyana’s Biodiversity Centre and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Minister within the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry addressed the graduates.
