A mechanic was yesterday sentenced to two years in jail after being found guilty of stealing a minibus and stripping it of its parts.
Yogeshwar Bisnauth, 55, was charged with stealing a Pit Bull mini bus, valued $4.7M, as well as a $7,000 bottle oil, a $7,500 box of brake pads and a $1,400 filter, which were all property of Dominque Jackson. The theft took place in April at Alexander Village.
At Bisnauth’s arraignment, his lawyer had stated that the owner of the bus had turned over the vehicle to his client to remove parts that he could not pay for.
However, following a trial Bisnauth was found guilty of the offence by Georgetown magistrate Judy Latchman.
Offering a plea in mitigation, the man’s lawyer explained that apart from Bisnauth suffering from diabetes and requiring medication twice a day, he is also the sole bread winner of his family. As a result, the court was asked to be lenient in sentencing.
Magistrate Latchman, in handing down the sentence, noted that she took into consideration that this is Bisnauth’s first time being charged and his age. However, Latchman noted that with his age, he should have had the knowledge and wisdom to do better. Bisnauth was subsequently sentenced to 24 months in jail and the magistrate urged him not to steal again.
