Members of Committee of Selection chosen

The National Assembly yesterday selected nine members to serve on the Committee of Selection.

GINA said that five members were put forward by the Government, and four were nominated from the Opposition’s bloc.

Chief Whip and Minister of Social Cohesion of the APNU+AFC Government, Amna Ally, nominated Minister of Social Protection Volda Lawrence, Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson, Minister of Tourism Cathy Hughes, and Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan, along with herself.

The Opposition’s Chip Whip Gail Teixeira nominated MPs Bishop Edghill, Neil Kumar, Gillian Burton-Persaud, along with herself, to represent the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) on the Committee. These nominations were seconded by Minister of Education Rupert Roopnaraine from the Government’s side and Irfaan Ali on the Opposition’s side.

The Committee of Selection is appointed as soon as possible after the beginning of each Parliament. It performs functions allotted to it by the Standing Orders and other matters that the National Assembly may assign to it.
