After robbing a taxi driver almost a month ago, Jermaine Sealy sealed his fate when he happened to hire another driver who knew about his crime and took him straight to the police.
Sealy, 26, of Victoria Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara was sentenced to two years in jail yesterday by Magistrate Ann McLennan after he pleaded guilty to a robbery charge.
He admitted that he robbed Timothy Yorrick of a cellphone, a cellphone case and a quantity of cash, carrying a total value of $52,000.
It was reported to the court by prosecutor Deniro Jones that on July 25th, at Orange Walk, Bourda, Sealy had entered Yorrick’s vehicle and asked to be taken to Bourda Market.
Upon arrival, Sealy requested that Yorrick lend him his cellphone, which the driver readily agreed to. After the cellphone was handed to him, Sealy took out a knife and started demanding money from Yorrick. When the complainant, out of fright, did not respond, Sealy proceeded to grab the cash from the dashboard and escaped.
Although the matter was reported by Yorrick, it was not until almost a month later, on August 18th, that Sealy ended up in the custody of the police. On that day, Sealy joined the vehicle of another taxi driver, who, acting on information he had received about the previous robbery, took Sealy to the Alberttown Police Station. There, Sealey was positively identified by Yorrick and police investigations led to the recovery of some of the stolen articles.
