The University of Guyana (UG) Trojans’ disappointing run in the University Games Championship continued on Wednesday, losing to hosts Panama by a 72-49 score line in their second encounter of the event.
Akeem Kanhai was the top shot for the Guyanese side with 16 points. In the opening period, the Trojans took the early lead as they outshot the hosts 17-11. However Guyana’s lead would quickly be extinguished in the second stanza as Panama outscored them 28-5 to take a 39-22 lead into the half.
Panama then increased their advantage in the third period, netting 22 points while restricting the Trojans to 13 points to enter the final quarter with a 61-35 lead. With a huge 26-point lead at their disposal, the hosts would be outscored in the final period 14-11.
On Tuesday, the Guyanese outfit went down to Guatemala by a 63-39 score line in their tournament opener. Emmanuel Archibald top scored in the loss with 16 points while Kanhai provided capable support with 13 points.
The first quarter saw Guyana taking the early lead as they outscored the Guatemalans 20-10. The Guyanese then saw their lead cut in the second period as Guatemala netted 12 points while reducing the Guyanese to nine points to go into the half trailing 29-22.
Guatemala would then take the lead in the third stanza, scoring 21 points while restricting the Trojans to a meagre four points to go into the final period ahead 43-33. They would then complete the win in the final period as they outscored the Trojans 20-6.
