Celebrated Kathak dancer Namrata Rai and renowned Tabla drummer Pandit Udai Mazumdar will take the stage today at the Indian Monument Gardens, at Camp and Church streets, Georgetown. The two artistes arrived in Guyana yesterday for the show, which is being sponsored by the High Commission of India and the Indian Commemoration
Trust. Rai is no stranger to the international stage as she has performed at various international events around the globe. She is very excited to bring her flare of Kathak dancing to Guyanese. Like Rai, Mazumdar is also an international performer. The musician is keen on delivering a very special performance, which he is confident will be liked by the Guyanese people. “What we bring is very special and very Indian,” Mazumdar told Stabroek News at the Ogle International Airport, soon after the musicians landed yesterday afternoon. Although Kathak dancing and Tabla drums are not strange to Guyanese, Mazumdar said Guyanese can expect a unique performance which may very well differ from what is known locally. “Music is like food… it changes with different ingredients and cultures, because what is called roti in Suriname is different from what is known to be roti in India,” he explained.
