Former members of the Guyana National Service (GNS) are hosting their second reunion, which will begin today.
According to a press statement issued by the Association of Ex-Guyana National Service Members, the expected highlight of the planned activities would be a symposium to be held on Wednesday, August 26th, at the Carifesta Sports Complex.
The symposium, which will be held with the theme, “Youth Development Strategies; problems and solutions, then and now,” will commence at 5pm and will see President David Granger as the featured speaker. The release said a religious service, commencing at 9am on August 23rd at the same venue, is expected to officially launch the 2015 reunion. It added that the group, which includes both overseas and locally-based members, will tour several areas countrywide, including New Amsterdam, Skeldon and Corriverton, in Berbice, the New Opportunity Corps at Onderneeming, Anna Regina, Kaiteur Falls and the Baganara resort in Essequibo.
The grand finale will take the form of a Gala Dinner and Dance to be held at De Impeccable Banquet Hall, at Brickdam, Georgetown on August 28th.
Organisers of the activities as well as the group’s membership “are joined by a deep conviction that National Service is relevant today,” the release said, while adding that “They shared a unique experience of the geography and cultures of Guyana, lifting a veil on the diversity, beauty and vast opportunities of our native land.”
Further, the release said collectively they treasured the National Service experience “as a unifying force that empowered us and has the potential to empower Guyana’s youth.”
