The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception better known as Brickdam Cathedral held a Grand Festival of Flowers in celebration of their centenary last Monday and Tuesday at the cathedral. This magnificent cathedral was designed by the late Leonard Stokes, an Englishman.
On entering the cathedral it was a wonderful feeling ‒ as if you were walking through flowerland and paradise at the same time.
Joining us in this celebration were the Orchid Society and The Horticultural Society of Trinidad, which did several beautiful and creative displays of tropical flowers, mainly anthurium lilies, orchids, heliconias ‒ including the famous sexy pink and sexy yellow heliconias ‒ ginger lilies in a rainbow of colours, and white tuber roses with their heavenly scent that adorned the nave and sanctuary rail.
Altogether there were 21 displays of tropical blooms along with imported roses, carnations, asian lilies, baby’s breath and fillers of all descriptions.
Some of the other groups which displayed exotic plants and fresh florals were the Sacred Heart Parish, Marian Academy, Gardenland Nursery, World of Flowers, St George’s Cathedral, the Hopkinsons, Church of the Annunciation WCD, Our Lady of the Mount Parish and the Cathedral Decorating Group.
Also visiting was a group of Ladies of Charity from St Lucia. Visitors of all walks of life flocked to the cathedral on both days. Also relaxing and enjoyable was the live music from the steel pan and the cathedral organ.
Until next week, happy gardening.
