Ally meets with private sector on ethnic relations body

On August 6, Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally met with officials at the Private Sector Commission (PSC) to discuss areas of collaboration and the status of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC).

According to a press release from the PSC, the meeting took place at the Commission’s Office in Waterloo Street and during which, Ally mentioned the Ministry has no intention of interfering with the work of the ERC but rather, to collaborate with that body.

Further, Ally said, the government would like to see the ERC become operational as early as possible and is willing to have the Commissioners (elected by the 10th Parliamentary Committee) assented to as long as they are approved by the Opposition.

The PSC said it believes in the independence of the ethnic relations body and it also views the functions Ministry of Social Cohesion as important to the degree that “a lot of value can be added to the country if the Ministry focuses heavily on its mission which is national cohesion.”
