A man was sentenced to 18 months in prison yesterday after he was found guilty of attempting to commit a felony.
It was reported to the court that Ceon Maynard walking behind a woman, pushed her and demanded that she hand over her cellphone.
Maynard, however, admitted that he approached the lady but insisted that he took nothing. Maynard, who was undefended, brought his mother to testify on his behalf. She testified that Maynard had been walking down the street when he was picked up by the police and taken to the police station.
During cross-examination, however, the prosecutor brought out that Maynard’s mother had not been present when the police apprehended her son and so could not give a true account of what had taken place.
Magistrate Judy Latchman after deciding that a prima facie case had been made out against Maynard, yesterday sentenced him to 18 months in prison.
