The acclaimed documentary “You Are Not Alone,” which examines struggles with depression among Black gay men, is being screened this evening at the Dutch Bottle Café.
The screening is being hosted by the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) in partnership with Depressed Black Gay Men (DBGM) Inc., and with support from USAID’s Advancing Partnerships and Communities (APC) Project.
According to a SASOD press statement, the documentary breaks a taboo in the Black and Black gay communities and shines a light on an issue that while remaining hidden and unaddressed has led to alcoholism, drug abuse and suicide.
“The documentary merges interviews with those who have suffered from depression, mental health professionals who placed the stories in context and relevance, and re-enactments of the stories to reveal society’s dark underbelly, exposing some of the most pernicious and destructive issues in many families and communities, such as sexual identity and orientation, sexual abuse and trauma, homophobia, discrimination, stigma and ostracism; an HIV diagnosis, and the isolation and loneliness experienced by older Black gay men,” the release.
In addition, Guyanese-born award winning journalist Antoine Craigwell, who is founder of DBGM, producer and an executive producer of the film, will be present to participate in a post-screening question and answer session.
There will also be free onsite HIV counseling and testing, supported by the USAID – APC Project.
The screening is being held at 6pm and admission is free.
