The Lady Jaguars advanced to the semi-final round in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Olympic Qualifiers after Cuba failed to defeat St. Kitts and Nevis by the required scoreline in their final group-4 fixture.
Needing to win by more than eight goals at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristóbal in the Dominican Republic, the Cubans could only secure a 6-0 result. Due to the result Guyana progressed to the next round via their superior goal difference.
The Lady Jaguars will now face off with the winner of group-1 on October 2nd in a single elimination tourney at a venue to be named.
Guyana’s possible opponents could be Haiti or Puerto Rico pending the outcome of their fixture.
The two finalists and the third place finisher from the resulting elimination tourney will advance to the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship as representatives of the region and will face off with giants USA, Canada, Mexico and two representatives from the Central America region.
The Lady Jaguars rose to prominence in 2010 after becoming the first national team from Guyana to feature in a CONCACAF tourney which was the Gold Cup held in Mexico.
Group one of the qualifiers will be staged in Puerto Rico and fields the hosts, Aruba, Haiti and Grenada while Group two will consist of host Trinidad and Tobago St. Lucia, Antigua & Barbuda and the Cayman Islands.
On the other hand, group three will be contested in Suriname and will feature the likes of the Dominican Republic, Dominica and Jamaica.
Unlike the u-23 age limit of the male version for individuals born on or after January 1st 1993, the women’s event does not have such a stipulation.
