Close to two weeks after Stephen Abrams was hit by a speeding driver along the Plaisance Railway Embankment, he remains hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) while the driver is still at large.
Abrams, 41, a barber of Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara, is nursing a fractured shoulder and a fractured ankle along with lacerations about his body and head.
The father of one said that he cannot remember how the accident happened as he became aware that he was involved in an accident after he woke up in the hospital.
However, persons in the area said Abrams was attempting to cross the road at about 8.30pm on August 17th when a speeding car struck him and continued on its way.
The injured man, who was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, was readmitted on Thursday. When Stabroek News visited Abrams yesterday, his left arm and leg were bandaged.
Marlon (only name given), who operates a shop near where the accident occurred, said that he did not see the collision but after hearing the impact of the crash, he saw Abrams in the air several meters away.
“All I hear is bam and I see he in the air,” Marlon said. The businessman recalled rushing to the scene, where he found Abrams motionless on the ground, while the driver of the car which crashed onto Abrams turned off his lights and sped away.
Marlon said that he helped lift Abrams into a taxi that was nearby and subsequently transported the injured man to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Meanwhile, a piece of a broken number plate bearing the number 94 was retrieved from the scene along with a “Carina” sign which reportedly broke off the car.
They were handed over to the police, who arrived about fifteen minutes after the accident, Marlon said.
