Osafio Roberts, who police say was found with an illegal gun during a police stop at a roadblock, was yesterday remanded to prison.
Roberts, 20, of East Ruimveldt pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of a .357 Magnum revolver and five live matching rounds when he appeared before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga at the Number 51 Village Magistrate’s Court.
According to the charges, Roberts was found with the weapon and ammunition on August 25th, when police stopped the vehicle he was in at a roadblock. At the time of the discovery, several persons were arrested but Roberts was charged based on advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Roberts was also charged with assaulting a police officer. It is alleged that Roberts unlawfully assaulted police officer 21406 with intent to refuse lawful apprehension.
Roberts pleaded not guilty to all the charges after they were read to him.
Police Sergeant Althea Solomon, who served as prosecutor, objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the crime, the nature and gravity of the offences and the current crime rate in the country. Her objections were upheld by the magistrate and Roberts was remanded to prison until September 22nd.
