Arshad Bacchus, found guilty of a knife-point robbery in which he stabbed the victim for a motorcycle, will be spending the next 56 months in jail.
The sentence was handed down yesterday by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where Bacchus was on trial.
The charge against Bacchus, 28, stated that on March 6th, at School Road, Agricola, while being together with others and armed with a knife, he robbed Anton Nauth of a motorcycle, valued $200,000.
Police stated that the attack occurred around 3am, after Nauth came off of his motorcycle to urine. As he was making his way back on to head to his destination, he was pushed off of the motorcycle and relieved of its keys. A scuffle ensued between Nauth and Bacchus, during which Nauth was stabbed to his back and foot. He was admitted to the hospital and later discharged, after which he positively identified Bacchus as his assailant.
Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick presented the police’s case, while attorney Latchmie Rahamat in association with Peter Hugh represented the convict throughout the proceedings.
Rahamat, during her final submissions yesterday, begged the court to be lenient when handing down the sentence and to take into consideration the fact that Bacchus had no previous convictions.
The magistrate, after considering all the evidence given throughout the trial and the need to deter others from committing similar crimes, sentenced Bacchus to spend the next 56 months in jail.
