Director of Sports Chris Jones and his National Sports Commission team yesterday pumped cash and other incentives into some of the country’s top sport associations as promised by the government for the continued expansion in this sector.
The handing over ceremony was held at the Commission’s Homestretch Avenue office and representatives from the respective fraternities received their spoils from Jones who said the venture was in keeping with the government’s promise to improve sports holistically.
Apart from cash checks, Jones presented various trophies, books, schoolbags and educational board games for the National Library among other things.
The respective associations would have previously requested monetary donations or that of gear and any other form of assistance from the commission.
Among some of the popular fraternities there were; the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Guyana Hickey Board (GHB), Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), Boyce And Jefford Track and Field Classic among others.
GABF President Nigel Hinds said that he was happy to receive assistance from the commission for the federation’s future plans. So too did representatives from GABA, GHB, the National Library, Best of the Best Martial Arts School, Guyana Football Coaches Association (GFCA) and the many others who were overwhelmed by the work of Jones and his team.
DCC President Alfred Mentore said that the gesture by the NSC was another way to ensure that cricket and the progress of the annual DCC camp continues, as well as their quest to turn the club into a multi-sport complex.
He added that DCC will be seeking to forge a solid tie with the NSC as to implement a permanent year round camp at DCC during the Easter, August and Christmas school breaks. Jones during his presentations declared that yesterday’s event was merely the beginning as the NSC will continue to assist the local associations in order to strengthen the entire faculty in Guyana.
