Demerara Queens got their Foxy Ladies organized third annual football championships off to the perfect start crushing Kuru-Kuru 7-0 in their opening group-B fixture when the event commenced on Friday at the Tucville ground.
Melinda Scott opened the scoring for the Lindeners with a sixth minute strike. Roshanna Granderson then make it 2-0 as she found the back of the net 10 minutes later. The score line then ballooned once more as Scott sealed her double with a 34th minute strike.
The goal rush continued for the Queens as Scott completed her hat-trick, netting compliments of a 45th minute strike. Not be outdone, Granderson would net her second of the day as she scored two minutes later.
The lopsided win was then completed as Natubique Goppy scored in the 52nd and 53rd minute respectively. In the tournament opener, arch-rivals Foxy Ladies and Little Diva Flames battled to a 1-1 stalemate. Tiandi Smith gave Foxy Ladies the early lead through a 37th minute. However, Little Diva Flames would secure a point as Abioce Haywood scored compliments of a 47th minute penalty kick conversion.
The action will continue today at the same venue with another four fixtures. In the opening match at 15:00hrs, West Side Conquerors will lock horns with Little Divas while Eagles United will oppose Kuru-Kuru FC whilst at 17:00hrs. The event which features eight teams from various parts of the country, will be played over eight days in an initial group stage format. Following the conclusion of the group stage, the top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout round.
Group A comprises Little Diva Flames FC (Georgetown), Foxy Ladies (West Demerara), New Amsterdam (NA) Warriors FC (East Berbice) and the Guyana Defence Force (Georgetown) while group-B comprise Eagles United FC (Georgetown), West Side Conquerors (West Berbice), Demerara Queens (Linden) and Kuru-Kuru FC (East Bank of Demerara).
