Election season for the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) is on the horizon as the Normalization Committee is reportedly considering the month of November for the Electoral Congress.
According to sources close to the federation, the Normalization Committee is considering November 14th as the date to hold elections to install a new executive body.
The deadline for the six weeks’ notice for GFF Elections to be held in the initially mandated month of September has already elapsed and this translates to the entity more than likely seeking an extension from FIFA, the sources added.
Member associations have reportedly been asked by the committee if the constitutional reform process can finish before that date so that can extension can be requested from FIFA in order for a date for the GFF Elections to be set. Upon the completion of the affiliates’ reform procedure, GFF elections will be held.
In July, Normalization Committee Chief Clinton Urling said that he was unsure if the entity can and will complete its mandate of restructuring Guyana’s football landscape before the stipulated September deadline.
Installed in October 2014, the Normalization Committee’s main objective was to reform the GFF constitution and all its affiliates before the aforesaid September deadline.
To date, only a new federation constitution has been adopted following an Extraordinary Congress held on June 26th.
The process to reform the body’s now 22 affiliates is yet to commence even though they Normalization Committee will serve as the electoral committee.
Some major amendments to the new constitution saw the federation membership being increased to 22 affiliates, 10 more than the previous allotment.
The new members of the federation will include the eight Elite League teams as well as newcomers the Guyana Futsal Association and the Guyana Beach Football Association.
The eight Elite League clubs which will be allowed a vote at GFF Congresses in the future are Alpha United, Slingerz FC, Pele FC, Georgetown Football Club, Guyana Defence Force, Monedderlust FC, Buxton United and Fruta Conquerors.
Similarly being amended was the voting count.
Under the previous GFF constitution, each of the nine associations had two votes each while each affiliate had one vote apiece.
This translated into 21 votes at the sitting of any congress.
With the increase of the membership in the new constitution, each member will only be allowed one vote in the form of the entity’s president which now equates to 22 votes.
