A 16-year-old was remanded to prison yesterday after he was charged with robbing a man at gunpoint and assisting two other persons in the theft of a water pump.
The teen pleaded not guilty to a charge of armed robbery when he appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The prosecution’s case is that on August 26th, while Kenneth Yow was using his cellular phone in his car on the ‘D’ Field Sophia access road, he was approached by two persons. One of them, who was armed with a gun, held him at gunpoint and relieved him of his phone and a sum of cash. The duo then escaped.
The court heard that when the 16-year-old was arrested for a simple larceny charge, he was identified in an identification parade as one of the two persons who robbed Yow.
He was remanded to prison on the robbery charge and October 8th is the next scheduled court date.
The teen was also charged yesterday along with Damian De Santos and Akeem Barnwell with the simple larceny of a water pump.
The three were accused of stealing the water pump, which belonged to Renatha McBean, on August 27th.
It is alleged that police, acting on information received, carried out a search on a house occupied by the three accused and found the stolen pump. When the three were questioned, they could not account for where the water pump came from or say who it belonged to. The three defendants were subsequently arrested and charged.
De Santos and Barnwell were placed on $25,000 bail by the magistrate and the matter was adjourned to October 8th.
