The victim of last Saturday evening’s fatal stabbing in Tiger Bay has been identified as Owen Browne.
Browne, called “Red Cap” and “Rasta Man,” was allegedly stabbed over 40 times by Christopher Stanley, who was in a fit of rage at the time.
Stanley remained in police custody up to yesterday and according to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum the case file is to be sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice today.
Residents and Stanley’s family said he had started to “trip out” about six months ago but refused to seek help for his episodes.
Prior to Saturday’s fatal attack, Stanley had been seen sharpening a knife, which is believed to have been the murder weapon. Stanley also attacked another man and chopped him in his head.
He later set upon Browne at the shack where he lived and repeatedly stabbed the man. It is unclear what might have provoked him to attack Browne.
After committing the attack, Stanley ran home, where it is believed that he tried to wash off the blood. He later ran to a nearby business and off-duty policeman, who was passing at the same time took him into custody.
The suspected murder weapon—a knife—was found under a bed in Stanley’s home while blood was also found in the bathroom.
When contacted yesterday, members of Browne’s family were still in shock at the way he met his end. His sisters, Urtence and Phylanna Browne, related that just last year around this period they faced a huge loss when their mother passed away. However, they are remaining hopeful that the suspect will face the full force of the law.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be performed tomorrow and Browne is to be buried on Thursday. Browne was the father of 12 children.
