Malteenoes Sports Club, the former home to table tennis, proved to be the top club when the Guyana Table Tennis Association staged its Summer Challenge tournament recently at the National Gymnasium.
The club, under Coach Idi Lewis ran away with four titles in the two day competition.
Shemar Britton copped the men’s singles, Kevon Corbin won the Open `B’ Class event, Nicholas Romain won the C Class event and Tyriq Saunders was the winner of the 13 years and under category.
Additionally, Sarah Sanmoogan reached the finals of the Novices category before losing to Isaiah Charles who along with Kaysan Ninvalle, winner of the 11 years and under category, is coached by Linden Johnson.
The tournament was deemed a resounding success with over 150 players participating.
The men’s Open tournament, missing several top players such as Christopher Franklyn and Nigel Bryan, was won by Britton who defeated a game Orin Hickerson 4-1 in the final.
Britton won 12-10, 11-8, 11-8, 11-8, 11-8 and 11-3.
Joel Alleyne and Edinho Lewis were joint third.
Britton defeated Edinho Lewis 11-6, 11-6, 11-5, 11-6 while Hickerson defeated Alleyne (4-3) in the semi-finals.
In the quarter finals, Britton defeated Jamaal Duff (3-0), Elishaba Johnson lost to Lewis (2-3), Colin France lost to Hickerson (2-3) and Stefan Corlette lost to Alleyne (2-3).
Overseas based players George Nicholas and Gary Pratt were among the 24 entrants.
“B” Class Open
In the “B” Class Open final, Kevon Corbin secured his maiden title when he defeated Corlette 2-10, 9-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-5 (3-2).
Joint third place went to Johnson and Jamal Duff who resumed playing after completing CXC and CAPE examinations.
In the semifinals Corlette got a walk over from Duff while Corbin defeated Johnson (1-3).
“C” Class Open
Romain, who scored one of the biggest upsets of the tournament when he defeated Miguel Wong, defeated Nevaeh Clarkston 15-13, 8-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-5 (3-2) in the final.
Brandon Jaikarran and Jamaal Nicholas were joint third.
In the semifinals Jaikarran lost to Romain (1-3) and Clarkston defeated Nicholas (3-0).
13-years-and-under boys
In the 13-years-and-under boys final, Tyriq Saunders defeated Terrence Rausch 11-6, 11-8, 11-8 (3-0).
Ninvalle and Yeudistir Persaud were joint third.
In the semifinals Rausch defeated Ninvalle (3-0) and Persaud lost to Saunders (1-3).
13-years-and-under girls
In the 13-years-and-under girls round robin play off, Nevaeh Clarkston she defeated Salenas Jackman (3-2), Abigail Martin (3-1) and Thuraia Thomas (3-2), to win the category.
Second place went to Jackman who defeated Martin (3-0) and Thomas (3-0), while Martin, who defeated Thomas (3-0) was third.
11-years-and-under boys
Ninvalle defeated Isaiah Layne (3-0) in the final of this category with Dhanesh Persaud and Colin Wong joint third.
In the semi-finals Ninvalle defeated Persaud (3-0) and Wong lost to Layne (0-3).
11-years-and-under girls
Thuraia Thomas defeated Shorana Roberts (3-0) in the final of the girls’ 11-years-and-under category.
Janay Prescod-Johnson and Kassia Liverpool were joint third.
In the semi-finals Thomas defeated Johnson (3-0) and Liverpool lost to Roberts (0-3)
Novices Open
In the Novices Open final, Isaiah Charles defeated Sanmoogan (3-0) with Mohamed Ali and Danesh Persaud joint third.
In the semifinals Sanmoogan defeated Ali (2-1) and Charles defeated Persaud (2-1).
