A work in progress

Dear Editor,

It is now just over three months into the new administration. There is this growing sense of the man at the top, the one who quietly leads the nation forward. It is still enigmatic at times, but I work with the cards dealt.

Amidst the engagements, there is this unruffled pool of cool reserve. Even when there are flurries of movement, there is an absence of the sturm und drang associated with cacophonous bustle. Here is the CEO, the delegator, the manager, and the motivator in action. There appears to be little by way of micromanaging, no self-marketing, none of the insecurity of having to be in everything and in front of everyone, as if to continually prove points and reiterate who is the boss. There is only this refreshing lack of truculence and petulance that characterized the abhorrence that pretended to be leadership earlier.

On this new watch, I look around for Little Caesars and imperious exarchs; they are hard to locate. Men and women man their posts, do their duty; they had better deliver. The whole of Guyana is listening, watching, evaluating. And so is the commander, too.

I don’t know about tomorrow, but speaking of today, I find that it is a far cry, a non-existent inaudible echo, from the coarse overweening days of old. This is good, and soothing to the soul. The vainglorious preening, the snarling bellicosity, and the hollow arrogance of past overseers are now but a desultory reminder of how troubling men and circumstances can become, when allowed to run amok. I am glad that yesterday is now consigned to the festering dumpsite beyond the edge of consciousness. We must move forward and focus on the myriad challenges of today, and throw weight behind the man who leads with a steadiness of purpose.

Today is about the firm guiding hand at the helm. There are times when I grow impatient and restless with the direction, pace, and tenor of things. This being art, and less of science, the conclusion is that the unfolding canvas might be unfathomable at points; the colour scheme questionable and controversial; and the interpretations unjust, if not premature. And that it is a work-in-progress.

It is hoped that final product will intrigue, perhaps encourage. For now, I continue to monitor the main man, as I seek to grasp his full measure. This I need, if only for my own enlightenment.

Yours faithfully,

GHK Lall
