International volleyball coach Julio Morales said the five-day Young player development course is expected to help students capture the full essence of sport as well as to further help boost the development of Volleyball in Guyana.
Morales, a professor from the University of Texas, is currently the facilitator of the near week-long course set up by the world body FIVB, as part of their pact with the local head body, the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF).
A former volleyball player and a coach for roughly 30 years, Morales said that he was happy to be in Guyana as part of the FIVB’s ongoing drive to help lift the professional standards of the sport locally.
The coach during a brief interview yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) said the primary target of the course was to ensure that in the end, more persons are familiar with the sport while adding that he is seeking to create professionals who can find many avenues as it relates to volleyball.
“It’s a course that falls under the international volleyball federation which brings ideas to help various countries promote volleyball. This one is called developing young players and it has to do with the theoretical and practical parts, ranging from the rules and other areas of the sport,” he declared.
With Guyana seemingly back on track with regards to the revamping of the sport, Morales explained that over the next few days he will be targeting a more theoretical approach to teaching as it embodies the core meaning of youth development.
Concluding his interview, Morales identified “on court skills, theoretical knowledge about the refereeing and teamwork as some of the areas he will be seeking to impart onto the players at the end of the course.
“They are at a young age and they can also follow different avenues to help with developing the sport in Guyana,” he said.
The programme is set to end on Wednesday.
