Top teams West Front Road-Gold is Money, Queen Street Tiger Bay, Bent Street, Festival City and Mocha Ballers were among the winners when the knockout round of the inaugural RDE Vibes and Sparta Boss ‘King of the Streets’ football tournament began Friday.
Played at the Sparta Boss Tarmac, East La Penitence, West Front Road downed Agricola 1-0 in the fourth fixture. Randolph Wagner settled the showdown in the seventh minute a powerful first time strike into the left side of the net from the left side of the field. In another fixture, Queen Street Tiger Bay overcame Alexander Village 2-1 on sudden death kicks after normal time ended 1-1. Prior to the fixture’s eventual end, Alexander Village took the lead in the fourth minute through a Shem Porter finish into the centre of the net.
However, Queen Street would, in the penultimate minute of the fixture progress as Darren Harris scored in the 19th minute with a left sided strike.
The third fixture of the night witnessed Bent Street downing Patentia Street Ballers 2-0.
Sheldon Profitt opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a finish into the back of the net from the left side of the field. The win was then completed in the 15th minute compliments of a right sided effort down the middle of the goal from Ryan Hackett. In the opening fixture, Festival City dismissed Globe Yard 2-1. Solomon Austin gave Festival City the early lead with a 12th minute conversion. Globe Yard quickly responded in the form of Anthony Francis who scored four minutes later.
Festival City would clinch the hard-fought contest when Dwayne Lawrence netted on the stroke of full-time compliments of a cheeky back-heeled shot after receiving a cross in front of the goal.
The sixth showdown saw Mocha Ballers upsetting West Demerara outfit Samaroo Dam 1-0. Amos Ramsay sealed the win for the East Bank of Demerara unit in the 12th minute with a left sided strike from the centre of the field into the lower left hand corner. In other results, Broad Street downed East Ruimveldt 1-0 compliments of a 20th minute penalty conversion from Rocky Gravesande whilst Upsetters dismissed Island All-Stars by a 3-1 score line.
On target in the win were Lorenzo Dewsbury and Orlando Ricketts in the 10th and 19th minutes correspondingly while an own goal in the sixth minute opened the scoring. Island All-Stars netted their only goal in the 14th minute.
Raiders defeated Sophia 1-0 on penalty kicks after normal time finished 0-0 while North East La Penitence downed Leopold Street 2-0 on penalty kicks following a scoreless normal time period.
Similarly registering a win was West Back Road who defeated North Ruimveldt 3-2 on penalty kicks after normal time ended score less.
The winner of the tournament will walk away with $400,000 and the championship trophy while the second, third and fourth placed sides will receive $150,000, $80,000 and $20,000 correspondingly. Action in the event continues today at the same venue.
