The Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) yesterday named a strong 12-man team to represent the country at the upcoming male CSV Indoor tournament which spikes off from September 27, in Brazil.
After a few weeks of intense training sessions facilitated by National Head coach Levi Nedd and Assistant Coach Ian Wills, the best players from the respective counties vied for a spot in the national side as they begin a journey to put Guyana at the number one spot in South America.
The players were selected by a panel of four including Nedd, GVF President John Flores, Leota Langford and Trevor Smith.
The panel chose to stick with some of the experienced players the likes of Creston Rodney, Quacy Matheson, Jason Seelochan and Wendell Austin while some fresh faces are expected to add sufficient support to the experienced campaigners.
Nedd, during a brief comment, said that he was satisfied with the hard work put in by the guys and lauded his deputy Wills for the tireless effort and support shown during the camp.
“We have a good team, pretty young players that will last a long time with good maintenance, that’s why I’m happy to be a part and I’m getting great support from Wills. He put in a great effort and I think we will do well.”
Nedd said the selection panel was very precise in its scouting of the 12 players but explained that the entire 20 persons from the pool shortlisted, performed to the best of their abilities.
Nedd said that he believes that the team is well balanced.
“It was very, very competitive in key areas, but we chose four middle blockers, four wing attackers, two setters with one specialist, one libero and one swing attacker,” he explained.
The camp broke yesterday for the volleyballers and is expected to resume shortly. The team will begin simulation games from September 18 until they wing out on the 26 of this month. The captain and his deputy will also be selected sometime shortly according to Nedd.
The male Volleyball team reads- Trevlon McRae, Quacy Matheson, Creston Rodney, Adriel Moore, Shemroy Ross, Jason Seelochan, Khemraj Singh, Samuel Fraser, Cleveland peters, Ian Bagot, Vans Harding and Wendell Austin.
