Forty-six-year-old Ray Thomas was yesterday sentenced to 18 years in jail after being found guilty of raping an eight-year-old girl.
When asked by Justice Dawn Gregory if he wanted to say anything before being sentenced, the unrepresented Thomas opted to remain silent.
Justice Gregory, who presided over the trial at the High Court in Georgetown, then informed Thomas that he was being sentenced to 18 years in prison. He was found guilty by a jury.
The charge against the convict was that on February 2, 2012, in the county of Demerara, he engaged in the sexual penetration of an eight-year-old girl.
The trial was held in-camera.
The state’s case was presented by Prosecutor Orinthia Schmidt.
