An employee of Builders Hardware and General Supplies was charged on Tuesday with embezzling $500,000 from the company.
It is alleged that on August 24th, Bhowanie Ramotar, of Lot 7 Railway Street, Kitty, fraudulently embezzled the money from his employer, Rakesh Samaroo, of Builders Hardware and General Supplies.
Ramotar, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him in a city court.
It is alleged that on August 17th, Ramotar collected an open cheque made out in the sum of $500,000 from Hai Fung Thong, which he was entrusted to deliver to Samaroo. Instead of doing this, however, the accused reportedly gave the cheque to Andrew Frazer, who cashed it at a GBTI branch on Regent Street.
Ramotar, in his bid to evade the charge, told the court that he would repay the funds. His plea was, however, disregarded by Magistrate Ann McLennan, who presided over the matter.
Ramotar was placed on $120,000 bail and the matter has been adjourned to September 30th for outstanding statements.
