An East Ruimveldt man who may have been set up by his roommate, found himself yesterday in a city court facing charges of unlicensed gun and ammunition possession.
Devon Garraway, 24, of 317 East Ruimveldt was charged with the possession of a .32 revolver as well as 24 matching live rounds of ammunition. The accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charges read.
Prosecutor Shawn Gonzalez related to the court that Garraway had been arrested by the police during a sting operation, which led to the discovery of the gun and ammunition on Garraway’s person.
The defendant however, insisted that the gun and ammunition were not his, but that the items had come into his possession after he had run an errand for his roommate, who asked him to uplift a package containing clothing and food items.
Garraway further claimed that the police who arrested him had been tracking his movements, pointing out that he was charged even before he knew the contents of the package.
Gonzalez objected to bail being granted to Garraway, stating that the accused had failed to offer the court a substantial reason why such should be done.
Magistrate Alex Moore, who presided over the matter, ordered Garraway to be remanded to prison until the case is recalled on October 13.
