Shawn Barrow, 23, was yesterday charged with the murder of Kellon Hinds, who was gunned down last Monday in what is believed to have been a reprisal killing.
Barrow was not required to plead to the charge, which stated that on August 31st, at East Ruimveldt, he murdered Hinds. Appearing for Barrow, attorney George Thomas stated that it was quite unfortunate that his client had found himself in such a situation and charged that it was not the first time accusations have been made against his client by the relatives of Hinds. However, the attorney revealed that he is in possession of video footage that will show that Barrow was elsewhere at the time of the shooting.
Meanwhile, Police Prosecutor Dinero Jones requested a three-week adjournment as he noted that the police file is still incomplete.
As a result, Barrow was remanded to jail until October 2nd, when the matter will be heard before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
Hinds, 22, called ‘Baje,’ of East Ruimveldt Squatt-ing Area, Georgetown, was fatally shot by three men in his family’s yard in the East Ruimveldt community just hours after being released from police custody.
According to members of his family, Hinds had been held by police as a suspect in the murder of Shawn’s brother, Sherwin Barrow, who was killed three months prior.
“Every time he (Hinds) come from abroad, they does rob he and they rob he last year and shot he up. He say he ain’t got time to go to no court and mek report. He was ‘fraid of them, so he say it ain’t mek no sense you go mek report and give people more reason for kill you,” a relative explained.
Hinds had only returned to Guyana from Barbados one week prior to being murdered.
“He come back last week and the police hold he, ’cause they say he was the last individual that had a problem with Barrow. He come out yesterday about 5.15 on $40,000 station bail. By time 9 O’clock they kill he,” the relative added.
