A Kitty businessman was robbed of a day’s sales on Sunday evening after a lone gunman entered his Dowding Street, Kitty shop and held him at gunpoint while demanding cash.
According to reports, about 9.05 pm on Sunday, Mohindar Nandulall was preparing to close one of his shops, both of which are located in Kitty, Georgetown when a gunman who had cloth wrapped around his face entered and requested that he hand over the day sales.
Speaking to Stabroek News, Nandulall explained that he owns and operates two shops in the Kitty community, but the robbery occurred at the Dowding Street, shop which is known as K & D Grocery and Variety Store.
According to Nandulall, he had just departed the Station Street shop and walked over to K&D Grocery and Variety store as it was about closing time. He said moments after he got there, he met with his wife and their shop attendant who was attending to customers at the time. He and his wife went into their office located in a small quarter of the shop to sum up the day’s business while the attendant was left to attend to customers. About five minutes later, the attendant saw a man enter the shop which had no other customers at the time, he said.
The man ordered the attendant to remain silent, and made his way into the shop through a small open space on the shop counter. He held the attendant at gunpoint backed into a freezer and at the same time, spotted Nandulall and his wife in the office. The gunman entered the office and ordered the couple to lie on the ground and not say anything or he would kill them. They abided with his instructions.
He then grabbed the day’s takings which they had been checking and placed it in an orange plastic bag. But according to Nandulall he wasn’t satisfied and asked them for more. Nandulall directed him to a drawer attached to the shop counter which had the remaining sum of money, which he grabbed before escaping.
Nandulall related that neither he nor his wife knew when the gunman exited the shop since they were left lying on the ground traumatized for a period along with his attendant who was pushed to the ground in the shop. He said it was not until a customer entered the shop that they realised the gunman had left.
They immediately contacted the police who responded promptly and did spot checks but came up empty handed.
Nandulall related to this newspaper that although he did not know by what means the gunman escaped, he was told by neighbours that based on the description he provided them with, the man was seen walking calmly down Dowding Street with an orange plastic bag in his hand.
This is the second robbery that the businessman has encountered in the last few years. He expressed concern about the increase in the number of such incidents with nothing being done, though he was thankful that no one was hurt throughout the ten minutes ordeal.
