Beverley Persaud, the wife of murdered Herstelling carpenter Nathan Persaud, was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with the crime.
Persaud, 46, of 56 Diamond New Scheme, was charged in a city court with murdering her husband on September 10, pursuant of an arrangement where money was promised to a man called ‘Jason’ as compensation for the death of the deceased.
The defendant was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Magistrate Ann McLennan, who presided over the arraignment, ordered Persaud to be remanded until October 13, when the case will called again.
While Persaud has been remanded, the man she allegedly hired has still not been held by police. Last Friday, Persaud was taken into police custody for questioning regarding her husband’s death. Mere hours later, the woman allegedly confessed to orchestrating the murder, including hiring a hitman to carry out the act.
It was revealed that Persaud met her husband’s killer a few weeks ago through a relative and offered him money to carry out a hit on her husband in return for funds to assist in his travel overseas.
Nathan Persaud’s lifeless body was discovered at his home at about 10 am on September 10, bearing wounds to the head, and lying in a pool of blood. A neighbour reported hearing screaming coming from the residence but did not think to investigate until he saw a man leave the compound minutes later, raising his suspicions. At this point, the concerned neighbour alerted other residents, who proceeded to Persaud’s house, where they discovered his battered body.
It is believed that the deceased was bludgeoned using a brick and a hammer, both of which were found at the scene of the crime. The number ‘20’ was also found smeared on a refrigerator, corresponding with the number of times Persaud was hit, as was revealed by a post-mortem examination.
