Renovation work for CASH, National Gymnasium so…

French Guiana and Guyana are awaiting word on whether Suriname will take up the reigns of hosting the second leg of the Inter Guiana Games (IGG) next month.

This is according to Director of Sport, Christopher Jones who gave an IGG update to this publication yesterday.

Initially, French Guiana indicated its willingness to host the second leg of the annual tri-nation Games from October 27-31, but recently shelved those plans due to elections in December.

Jones told this publication yesterday that “French Guiana has since asked us or Suriname to host the second leg with badminton and chess included but we are about to start renovation works at the Sports Hall and the National Gymnasium so as such we would not be able to host the second leg.”

The Director of Sport added: “We have since sent a letter to French Guiana indicating this and we have asked Suriname if they can run with the second leg with financial assistance from French Guiana. If Suriname is able to host the second leg, Guyana will be competing in the disciplines.”

Jones also shared the history of the Games which began in 1967 and was the brainchild of then Premier Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham to foster a spirit of solidarity.

He then pledged his personal commitment and that of the Government of Guyana to ensure the Games continue to forge closer cohesion among the Guianas.

Note: The first leg of the Games was allegedly cancelled due to miscommunication.
