Fresh off their success at the National Novices Championship last month, the New Opportunity Corps (NOC) has returned to the city with a five-man team to compete in this weekend’s Intermediate Championship.
During the two-day championship which will be named in honour of Guyana’s first Commonwealth champion Lennox Blackmoore, the NOC boxers will once again get a chance to showcase their talent under the bright lights of the East Ruimveldt Community Centre.
According to coach of those boxers Lawrence Kellman, he expects them to “give a good account of themselves.”
“They are motivated and their expectations are high,” Kellman told Stabroek Sport via telephone yesterday. He added that the boxers who paid a courtesy call on president of the GBA Steve Ninvalle on Wednesday “are eager to go after their competition.”
Kellman maintained that win or lose, the Simon Pures will come out victorious from the learning experience of once again competing in a controlled setting.
The coach further noted that the boxers will fight in the divisions from bantamweight to middleweight. Stephan Fordyce, Lennox Walton, Andrew Newton, Kellon Isaacs and Okeefe Husbands were named by Kellman as the boxers that will represent the NOC.
GBA’s Technical Director Terrence Poole disclosed yesterday that combatants will come from gyms like Republican, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Forgotten Youth Foundation, Young Achievers, Pocket Rocket and others.
The competition commences under floodlights at 7pm nightly. (Emmerson Campbell)
