As part of an initiative to empower rural women and teach them to manage and sustain small entrepreneurial ventures, First Lady Sandra Granger on Thursday launched an entrepreneurship workshop for the women of Good Hope.
“A lot of our women don’t realise that they do have skills that they can market and be successful entrepreneurs,” Mrs. Granger told those gathered at the Good Hope Learning Centre.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of the Presidency, the initiative is being funded by the Office of the First Lady and will see a similar workshop launched shortly in Linden. Based on the outcomes, it will then be expanded to other communities across the country, the statement added.
Thursday’s workshop was conducted by Wayne Barrow of Interweave Solutions, which is a non-governmental organisation that helps local organisations and congregations in developing countries to create self-reliance by providing them with the necessary training to implement and promote their own business plans.
Mrs. Granger explained that the model that is being used has been tried and tested by Interweave Solutions and has proven to be successful in places like Africa, and parts of Central and South America.
She further noted that such programmes can unlock the potential of women across Guyana. “We want to encourage the women and empower them so that they use their skills and learn to be successful and make some money in the process,” she added.
