Bernard Shaw, who admitted to stealing from the Baroombar strip club during a break-in, has been sentenced to nine months in jail.
“The people them get back them thing, my worship, so I begging you for some leniency. I am a sickly man,” Shaw, 41, told city magistrate Ann McLennan prior to his sentencing yesterday.
After the magistrate handed down sentence, Shaw happily walked out of the prisoner’s dock and shook a police officer’s hand.
The court heard that Shaw, of Lot 167 Enmore North, East Coast Demerara, had performed odd jobs around the club.
The charge against him stated that on September 16th, at North Road, Bourda, Georgetown, he broke and entered the club and stole a microwave and a gas cylinder, valued at $47,000 in total and belonging to Tyrone Hamilton. Shaw pleaded guilty.
According to Prosecutor Deniro Jones, Hamilton discovered the items missing and subsequently made a report to the police station. Jones further stated that footage from interior and exterior surveillance cameras showed Shaw entering the club and leaving with the articles. He was seen nearby sometime after and was arrested.
Jones said Shaw admitted to committing the break-in and provided the police with information on where he had the stolen items, which were recovered.
Shaw told the court that he was involved in the scrap iron business until he fell ill.
The court also heard that he was sentenced in 2006 to two years in jail for simple larceny.
