After running away with his fifth consecutive Massy Group of Companies 10km road race title two Sundays ago, Cleveland Forde is looking forward to tomorrow’s Courts 10k and the South American 10k series with optimism.
Speaking with Stabroek Sport yesterday, Guyana’s premier distance athlete said he is confident of making his mark and improving at the upcoming events starting with the Courts fixture which runs off at 6 am.
The ‘Little Kenyan’ who clocked 33 minutes and 15 seconds on Sunday, some five ticks faster than last year’s winning time is aiming to run faster as the season winds down.
“I am feeling quite prepared but I will take it one race at a time but I’m definitely competing to win.”
Forde’s appetite for success is insatiable.
“It’s always great when you win and I want to remain healthy and continue to do that. I will try to use these events as yardsticks and try to peak for the South American races since they are expected to be more competitive this year.”
Meanwhile, the fifth running of the Courts 10km event will see a record $1.3M going towards the top finishers and logistics.
The winners of the open male and female categories will pocket $100,000 each, while the immediate runners up will take home $75,000, $50,000, $30,000 and $20,000 respectively.
The fixture which is expected to attract usual suspects, Forde, Cleveland Thomas, Alika Morgan, Andrea Fortune and Euleen Josiah-Tanner will run off at 06:00hrs in front of Courts on Main Street.
Athletes were urged to register at the Guyana Olympic Association headquarters in Kingston no later than yesterday. (Emmerson Campbell)
