I have written so much on trees in the city and it all seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Even as I write this, I am trying again to make contact with the authorities.
Last Friday afternoon on my way home, as I drove along Homestretch Avenue, I saw to my horror that someone had brutally chopped a Long John Tree which was in full bloom alongside Botanical Garden.
These branches were chopped any ‘old how’ from the sides of the tree leaving the poor tree unbalanced and unsightly. The chopped branches were just left there.
On a closer inspection most of the trees alongside Castellani House to CANU Head Office are overgrown and from time to time the branches are chopped or just broken away and left hanging.
Shame on whoever butchered the Long John Tree. If for some reason the tree had to be trimmed, at least it could have been trimmed properly so that it would have remained balanced and elegant.
I would like to remind those doing the butchering that these trees were planted in the city for a purpose. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen that purify the air we breathe in. They also provide shade in the streets, avenues and parks.
How in the world can we promote a greener and healthier Guyana when our trees are being brutalized, destroyed and left unsightly? It is time for citizens to speak out on such brutality towards our trees.
Another disaster happened last week when a branch broke off from an overgrown tree near the High Court and damaged a vehicle.
Let us do our part to get the authorities to maintain these trees and prevent further disasters as we promote a greener and healthier Guyana.
