After a seven-year absence which could see sanctions being imposed, Guyana will be in attendance at this year’s Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labour to be held in Washington from September 29th to October 1st, according to Minister of State Joseph Harmon.
Addressing reporters at a post-Cabinet press briefing on Friday, Harmon said the matter was raised by Minister of Social Protection Volda Lawrence.
In considering this matter, he said, Cabinet noted with concern “the fact that the previous administration has not participated in these conferences for the past seven years,” resulting in Guyana being confronted with the possibility of sanctions by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
As a result, he said Cabinet urged the Minister of Social Protection and the Chief Labour Officer to attend the meeting with the firm commitment from the government to satisfy the requirements of the ILO.
