Following another successful stint in England, seasoned Guyanese all-rounder Kellon Carmichael is eying a spot in the local Cricket Guyana Inc. (CGI) franchise Academy.
The Malteenoes Club Captain recently returned from another purple patch with both bat and ball for the English based Hadleigh and Thundersley Cricket Club.
Roughly three months of quality cricket in fierce English conditions, Carmichael notched up some 669 runs from 21 innings with two not outs and a highest score of 86 against Woodford Wells Cricket Club. He ended with seven half centuries
The right-arm fast-bowler bagged 46 wickets with a best of 4-19 versus Southindians Cricket Club. “I was the second highest run getter for my team and the leading wicket taker. I ended the season as the 4th highest wicket-taker in the entire league and 18th highest run getter”, said an elated Carmichael who was proud of his personal achievements overseas.
When asked why he believed he should be acknowledged for a spot in the local Academy, the 27 year-old replied by saying, “I think I am capable enough as I have been a consistent performer at inter-county level ever since making my debut in 2008”.
“Also I’m a versatile player in that, I can be efficient as bowler, batsman and wicketkeeper”. Carmichael was also asked why he thinks with so much experience at a still young age and being consistently injury free, he still can’t seem to make an impact with the selectors, and he jokingly replied by saying “Honestly that’s the million dollar question”.
“I’ve never been given any specific reasoning, I been playing professionally in Trinidad and the last two season in the United Kingdom and my performances have been good”.
With quality all-rounders such as Chris Barnwell, Barbadian Raymon Reifer, as well as youngsters like Sherfane Rutherford giving good account of themselves, the Guyana President’s XI player admitted that he will have to continue the work locally and produce the same results in order to put himself in contention.
He targeted Club cricket for now as a mean of signalling his intention. “I plan to let my performances do the talking and I’ll do that by scoring big runs and taking lots of wickets for Malteenoes”.
Concluding his interview with Stabroek Sports, the right-handed batsman said his time in the UK was yet another learning process for him and he plans to utilize his upgraded skills in order to represent Guyana at the Regional level. (Clifton Ross)
