“These techniques taught will bolster our officers’ confidence in their execution of their duties,” Ramesh Ghir, the airport’s Chief Executive Officer, was quoted as saying in a CJIA statement on Friday.

According to the statement, the Guyana Defence Force is facilitating the training, which would see the officers becoming proficient in martial arts. It noted that every ASO is required to demonstrate the level of his/her operational proficiency when confronted by a hostile airport user.

A batch of 13 officers is currently being taught various takedown methods and tactics to neutralise armed assailants. Training for the other two batches, each comprising 15 officers, will commence shortly, the statement added. This is the second year that such training is being conducted.
