NEW DELHI, India, CMC – Indian Cricket Board’s (BCCI) top brass are expected to meet soon to determine an interim president for the organization, following the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya.
The 75-year-old Dalmiya, who took up the post last March, died on Sunday after being admitted to hospital last Thursday.
Rajiv Shukla, chairman of the Indian Premier League, said yesterday an interim president would be put in place once the constitution allowed.
“Nobody can match Jagmohan Dalmiya’s talent as well as stature. The void will be tough to fill,” Shukla said.
“The BCCI will hold a meeting to see what can be done. We will have to see if somebody can be elected as the new interim president. If the BCCI constitution permits, then there is scope for having an interim president.”
Dalmiya, who was cremated yesterday, was one of the most experienced administrators in Indian cricket.
He had already served as BCCI president in the past and also headed up cricket’s world governing body, the International Cricket Council, when he was elected president back in 1997.
Widely praised for his leadership at every level, Shukla also credited Dalmiya for transforming the BCCI into financial heavyweights.
“I know him for the last 25 years. He has helped every time right from 1984 when the board had very little money. His vision, the way he worked helped Indian cricket scale new heights,” Shukla said.
