The South Central People’s Development Association of Rupununi has created history for Guyana, winning the United Nations Development Fund’s Equator Prize for the year 2015.
The local non-governmental organization has become one of 20 organizations to capture the award of US$10,000, a press release from the Ministry of the Presidency said. It added that it is the first time Guyana has managed to capture that prize. In addition the group’s winning initiative will be supported to participate in a series of special events at the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference in Paris, France in December 2015.
The Equator Prize 2015, is awarded to 20 local and indigenous community initiatives that are advancing innovative solutions for people, nature and resilient communities.
The South Central People’s Development Association aims to improve the standard of living of people in the South Rupununi region. It has been highly active in recent years in addressing health, agriculture and capacity building, a press release stated.
The Government of Guyana congratulated the organization for the achievement and expressed hope that the success can be seen as an inspiration for further achievement in the area of sustainable development as the country continues to lead the fight against climate change.
The UN will soon be hosting a press conference to announce the full list of winners, the release said.
