Dear Editor,
I write to ask how could something so stupid, punishing and detrimental to people’s health be allowed to fester in our society for so long. Something is seriously wrong not only with those who continue to terrorize people in their homes at any hour with loud music, but with the administration for failing to exorcise this curse from the society with the urgency they ought to. This is one problem that should be fixed swiftly by this new administration, with no excuses or compromise.
After writing so many letters and for five years desperately seeking help to safeguard my failing health and enjoy peace and comfort in my home, especially at weekends from those who continue to operate their nightclubs and liquor bars as if they are the sole persons residing in the area, it seems as though nothing drastic will be done to stop this cruelty in a hurry.
The heavy bass emanating from one particular nightclub causes a terrible feedback on the zinc fences around the area; it is a living hell.
The management claims that this place is soundproof, but this is not so, noise is escaping from the building because some inferior method was used, and when the music is turned up it pitches and bounces off the zinc and then the horror begins all through the night until it’s closure time at 2 am. The administration should instruct these offenders to have the same method used at NCN-Voice of Guyana; when standing outside that department absolutely nothing is heard.
Then on the side someone in a private vehicle or taxi has to chip in with their senseless contribution of stupid noise even on Sundays; the last Sunday was no different.
As if this is not enough, while some ranks of the police force are polite and helpful some behave as if they are in a barnyard.
There must be some humanitarian effort by this administration to stop this. Noise annoys and it is a vexation to the spirit. It is also damaging to people’s health.
I ask only to be able to enjoy my space, secure my health from further damage and for the much craved peace and comfort I am cruelly being denied for the five years since I lodged my first complaint.
The Minister of Public Security should ensure that the police be given a copy of the Noise Document published in the Official Gazette (page 226) in 2000, so that they can better understand their role when it comes to dealing with noise complaints.
Banks DIH should also ask the persons who carry out their Happy Hour promotion to do so responsibly in order to curb the noise.
Yours faithfully,
P Lewis
