Laksmana Ramroop outplayed 32 other golfers last weekend to emerge victorious in the Demerara Mutual Assurance Society’s sponsored tournament at the Lusignan Golf Club.
Director of Sports Christopher Jones, was among a few of the spectators on hand to see Ramroop, with a handicap of 28 ending with a net 63.
Second was Patanjalee Pur `I love the winning feeling’ Persaud who ended with a net 65 from a handicap of 20.
Parmanand Persaud who also had a 20 handicap ended with a net 67.
The Best Gross was achieved by former Captain Patrick Prashad while the Nearest to the Pin winner was Gavin Todd.
Persaud, who won the previous weekend’s Silvie’s-sponsored tournament, was favoured to win again but young Ramroop had other ideas.
Clarence Perry, Marketing manager of the company, at the distribution of prizes ceremony, expressed his delight at the company’s partnership with the Lusignan Golf Club.
“We at Demerara Life have been supporting golfing in Guyana for a very long time and are very happy to be part of its 50th year of operation. And, indeed, Dem Life has been in the business so long, and has been doing so well, I am confident we will be here with you to celebrate your 100th year.”
Jones, who was given the opportunity to putt and drive on what was his first visit to the club, also assisted Perry with the distribution of prizes.
“I am happy at the experience of my first visit to the Lusignan Golf Club. I assure that the club can look forward to support from the Department of Sports.”
Golf Club President, Oscar Ramroop, conveyed heartfelt gratitude to Dem Life, the Director of Sports, the competitors and spectators and even the kitchen staff for their contribution to making the day’s event a success.
He indicated that for its 50 years of operation the LCG has had no material support for maintenance of the club from the government adding that he hoped the presence of the honorable director would establish some kind of material assistance – whether, financial or machinery or otherwise – that would contribute some relief to the club in the significant burden of maintaining the sport and especially the grounds.
He also spoke of the recent free summer golf clinic and took time off to acknowledge golfer Leslie Kellman who came out of that clinic. Ramroop added that it was his and the club’s desire for ongoing golf clinic-type training programmes for children, and the government’s input would help this in a great way.
