Several nurses received awards recently when the Guyana Nurses Association (GNA) held its annual awards ceremony at the GNA Hall, Charlotte & Alexander Streets, Lacytown.
According to a press release, former coordinator of the Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BScN) at the University of Guyana Gwendolin Tross, who gave the keynote address, applauded the commitment of the GNA and the nurses who were honoured.
However, she lamented the present state of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) and the treatment given to nurses and nursing issues by non-nursing personnel who are in the health system. She said that nurses should be a loud voice in matters that concern nurses and nursing. She also spoke of the care patients receive at the GPH and conditions under which nurses have to work at this institution, the release said.
Meanwhile, the Gloria Noel Award was presented to Region 8 Health Visitor Eslyn Williams and Teona Greene-Eririogu, Chairperson, Educa-tion Committee, GNA was honoured with the Gillian Butts-Garnett Award.
Joan Stewart, Executive Member; Donnett Gullin, Chairperson GNA Branch in Region 10; Kim Jordan, Midwife at the Fort Wellington Hospi-tal in Region 5 and Beverly Edwards, Staff Nurse/Midwife at the West Demerara Regional Hospital in Region 3 were recipients of the GNA Award.
The release said too that Latoya Thom received the June Ward Award for the Most Improved Graduate Midwife, while Simone Barclay of the Charles Roza School of Nursing; Lester Christian of the New Amsterdam School of Nursing and Esther Tyndall of the Georgetown School of Nursing, received the Dr Randolph Sampson Award.
At the same ceremony, the GNA took the opportunity to hand over bursary awards to children of its members who were successful at the National Grade Six Assessment this year. Receiving awards were Ajani Merchant of Region 4; Alistar Scipio of Region 6; Brieana Lawrence, Vaughn Pollard, Jasmine Duke, Juanita Sampson and Shernika Kellman all of Region 10.
