Dear Editor,
I am confounded by the response of some persons to the untimely and unfortunate death of a Chinese worker on the airport construction site.
This behaviour speaks volumes about our level of ingratitude for the contribution of the Chinese to the development of Guyana. We have sorely underestimated the contributions of the Chinese government and by extension, the Chinese community present here.
Chinese nationals currently make up the largest group of foreign nationals present in Guyana. In the last ten years the largest development projects have been undertaken and financed by Chinese companies. The Cheddi Jagan International Airport upgrade, the Guyana International Conference Centre, The Marriott Hotel and the upgrade of the Kingston Power Plant are a few of the contributions to Guyana’s development.
Furthermore, the Chinese government has also donated two roll on/roll off ferries, had committed to contribute to financing for the Amaila Falls Hydroelectric project and was the major contributor to the One Laptop Per Family Programme.
China has a US$ 3.56 trillion in foreign reserves and is being courted by other Caricom countries for much desired investment financing. Historically China has been a reliable partner in the development of Guyana and we should value this relationship if we want to ensure investors continue to be part of our society.
My condolences to the family of the China Harbour employee, Mr Li. May he rest in peace.
Yours faithfully,
Oscar David
