A profligate Slingerz FC continued their disappointing showing in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Beer Elite League as they were held to a scoreless draw by the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) on Wednesday.
Staged at the GFC ground in Bourda, the Vergenoegen giant failed to record a solitary goal for the second consecutive game despite creating several opportunities. With the draw, Slingerz moves onto two points from as many fixtures while GFC claimed their first point.
Tipped to make light work of the youthful home side, Slingerz should have taken the lead in the 25th minute through Domini Garnette, who, upon flicking the ball over the onrushing custodian Derick Carter in the left side of the box, fired his effort into the outside left side netting.
The chances continued to be wasted by the West Demerara outfit in front of the large crowd with Garnette once again being the culprit two minutes later. Racing onto a through pass in the centre of the box, Garnette with only the keeper in his path, saw his tame attempt at a lobbed shot denied by the custodian. He failed to capitalise on the deflection, lashing it to the left side of the box wide of the goal.
National midfielder Vurlon Mills was then the guilty party in the 30th minute for Slingerz, placing his effort wide of the lower left hand corner from the top of the box, after collecting a pass from the left side of the box.
With the home side content with defending for long intervals, the chances continued to go a-begging for the Vergenoegen unit in the 47th minute as Garnette fired his attempt wide of the left corner from inside the centre of the box, after collecting a through pass from Mills.
Dwayne Jacobs then saw his effort denied in the 69th minute, pouncing on a botched clearance within the left side of the box before rifling a powerful effort in the direction of the right corner only to be thwarted by the outstretched hand of a diving Carter.
The home side eventually saw out the remaining minutes of the fixture to clinch a hard-fought point. The other matchup of the night witnessed Pele FC and Alpha United battling to a thrilling 2-2 stalemate.
The winner of the round will pocket $4 million while the second, third and fourth place teams will collect $2 million $1 million and $500,000 respectively. Similarly, the point’s leader prior to the knockout stage in the League Genesis round will pocket an additional $1 million.
